How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Metal Detector Help starts with one question: will this product suit the way you plan to use it? For detecting gear, that means the targets you want, where you search, your experience and the conditions the equipment can handle.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the person and the place

A detector set up for coins in parks may not suit gold prospecting or wet, salty beaches. A large coil can cover ground quickly, but a small coil may be easier to use around trash or in tight spaces.

We consider target type, ground and water conditions, detector weight, controls, coil size and what comes in the box. For digging tools, magnet fishing gear, gold panning equipment and find care products, we look at the material, dimensions and task they are meant to handle.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the details makers list, such as detector frequency, search modes, waterproof rating, battery type, weight, coil compatibility and included accessories. For pans, sluices, magnets, digging tools, cleaning tools and coin storage, we compare size, materials and stated use.

Makers describe their products in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like unstable signals, difficult controls, weak connection points, tools that bend, magnets that arrive damaged or storage that does not fit the coins listed.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A detector suited to a beginner or one type of target may score lower in a guide for experienced users or another setting.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell close models under similar names, so we check each model name and what comes in the box, and we only link new units.

We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not hands-on tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.

Metal detecting and magnet fishing rules vary by location, and permission may be required. Check local rules and get permission before searching or removing finds.
